I wonder whether there is still geniune people out there willing to share and learn from each other. I know everything is “competition”. To my dismay, I came across an advert in 88db.com extremely “disturbing”, the advertiser basically puts down Professional Groomers and Home Groomers, through their advertisement it clearly states, we are clumped up together like a ball of hay left to sun in an open field. Self proclaimed BEST is alright in my opinion, shows your confidence of delivering such service. But putting others in the same industry as you down, is downright rude and outrageous. Makes me wonder why would they want to do that…

I know that there is always someone charging higher, some charging lower. As long as, you deem the price you’re paying justifiable and you love and feel comfortable with your dog’s groomer, leave them in good hands. I know this period probably the busiest for Groomers, reason being that it is Christmas plus New Year plus Chinese New Year. Owners are getting their hair cut and so are their precious pooches. Everyone wants to look their BEST!

I feel really regretful when I am unable to groom my dogs fans, but I am really packed at certain days, I really hope you all can understand that it is not beacuse I choose my customers or whatsoever. During this period, I am handling alot of dogs, I don’t want to there to be an unpleasant experience or accident to owners or their dogs. I believe no one wants it to happen at all. Of course, I also have to be fair to all because it is never easy to groom them and even harder to please their owners. It is hours of hard work, but I am proud to say that every groomed dog is a walking testimonial of my passion and my love for dogs.

There are just too many brands and types of shampoo in the pet market. Spoilt for choice? Perhaps…

What worries Pet owners is selecting a suitable type of shampoo for their dog’s skin and coat. Just like our human hair, shampoos are custom made to suit the individual needs just like for the different types of coat and skin.

The aim is in providing him a shampoo for his needs since there is no such thing as the best shampoo option there. It is always a good idea to read the ingredients list. Look for one with organic or natural ingredients used to deodorises and clean your dog. You may be interested in reading this article on “The function of ingredients found in dog shampoos”.

When selecting a shampoo, it should

Have good quality of ingredients *Opt for natural or organic shampoos rather than synthetic ones*

Serve its basic purpose: Clean (Lathers up well and rinses totally), detangles and condition,

If so… serve its specific needs: Coat enhancer, Sensitive skin, Dry skin, Conditioning, Tick/Flea seasons, etc…

Be pleasant smelling: Becareful of shampoos that have overwhelming heavy artificial perfumes or scents because this can lead to skin allergies and respiratory irritations as well.

For most breeds, though an all-purpose shampoo works perfectly fine. But if you want your shampoo to do more than clean, you might consider a special formulated shampoo.

Here are the various types of shampoos that could come handy:

For Coat Enhancing Purposes: Brightening specific colours. Avoid using Whitening shampoos too often as it is drying to your dog’s coat.

For Sensitive Eyes: Tearless Puppy Shampoo

For Coat texture: Silky Coat? Wired Coat? Deep Silky Conditioning for giving the overflowing sleek look. Bodybuilding and Crispy Coat formulated shampoos to volumize and enhance your dog’s right texture of coat.

For Sensitive skin: Hypoallergenic or Medicated ones, get Vet’s prescription

For Tick/Flea Seasons: To repel ticks and fleas. *on a personal note, I don’t believe in relying on shampoos to repel such pests, consider Neem Oil, but it stinks!*

Some pointers!

Check for ingredients which may irritate your dog

Avoid uses heavy scented shampoo

Keep in mind that some tick/flea shampoos may irritate the skin

Follow the recommended usage

Lastly, when bathing your dog, keep water away from eyes, nose, mouth and ears.

De Groomer shares: Potion’s Pup, Caesar and Dog Bites

Last weekend, my sister brought her 1 month old Black and Silver puppy, Caesar, over to my house with the 3 naughty rascals (Wigan, Potion and Magic). Caesar is a fat Dog.

Yesterday’s Olympics 2008 opening at Beijing bedazzled tonnes of everyone on their couches watching the live coverage. For a National Day that lies on a Saturday, Monday’s a public holiday for everyone to rest and recover!!! Watch the Olympics all-you-want/can and tuned in to Singapore’s National Day celebration. Then you get Tuesday Blues..! Hah!

Have you hung your flag? Patriotic Singaporeans, check whether your flag is hanged the WRONG SIDE! Hey! Some people reckon it isn’t that bad even if the flag is been displayed the wrong side. No way, please have some pride in displaying your nation’s flag at least…

Most owners are absolutely shocked with the way their dogs react during grooming, that is because they do not carry out consistent grooming routines at home and do not understand that grooming has to be consistent. When did you last pick up a brush and brush your dog?

Dogs tend to react negatively when left at a foreign environment and having someone who he/she is not familiar with poking their “tools” into them. DIY grooming should start at a young age, resistance and tussle is the norm. It only gets harder when dogs learn that they can get away from grooming every time by struggling, biting or yelping… Psychologically, it becomes harder for the owner to carry out grooming on their dogs.

What can you do is to talk to your Groomer about your dog’s grooming needs, build mutual trust, understanding and respect between you, yourself as an owner and your dog’s Groomer.

If you’re unsatisfied with the service rendered because of inflicting accidents (clipper burns, cuts, abrasions, etc), did the Groomer try to shrink responsibility and pretend it didn’t happen.

Please be understanding that, Dogs ain’t models that will stay still and allow a Groomer to groom them properly. Think again, what’s the reason you don’t groom your dog and expect your Groomer to work miracles?

If the cut “Sucks!”, find another groomer, I feel that it is absolutely harsh to criticise on someone else’s creativity. Every Groomer has his/her own style and creativity.

If you feel that your Groomer is abusing your darlings, talk to your Groomer about the insecurities, a lot of misunderstanding starts off from the issue of communication.

De Groomer shares: Dealing with Difficult owners (I)

In the dog grooming industry, Groomers bound to run across that particular difficult client who really tests our people skills and professionalism. It may be someone who calls at the last minute and gets highly annoyed that you can’t accommodate her. It may be someone who feels the need to haggle your prices with you over the phone before placing an appointment. What about a person who accuses you of been negligent or harming their precious dogs under your care?

The soft skills aka people skills is what I always been lacking, always told to be patient and not lose my cool over such things, but it hurts me deeply that even when I give my 100% TLC during Grooming and I get slapped right back.

I learnt that every business on this planet gets complaints. Usually, I will deal with the situation immediately. Either I give an immediate response to the person I am dealing with, or get my assistant to do so. I prefer the latter as my assistant is a way “cooler” person than I am. The situation only worsens when I leave the complaint unattended; it adds to my stress level and tests the patience of my unhappy client.

Before I offer any remedy, I usually put my “puffiness” aside and seek to listen to what the person has to say with a calm and understanding approach. Most client problems revolve around the issue of communication.
